Gourds are neither flat nor smooth, so a saw designed to work on wood does not always produce the desired results on gourds. The flat shoe will cause the blade to raise and fall from the gourds surface as you cut and because the curviture of the surface your cutting is rounded, it is often hard to see where you are cutting.
